Thanks to Bruce Hulme, NCISS Legislative Director, NCISS, for alerting us that the Federal Trade Commission settled a telephone pretext case filed against CEO Group Inc., doing business as “Check Em Out,” and five other Web-based operations that obtained and sold consumer’s confidential telephone records to third parties. The defendants were charged by the FTC with violating the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which provides that customer’s phone records may only be disclosed “upon affirmative written request by the customer.” Read the FTC’s press release here
Read the court filing Pretext CEO Case
In another FTC case filed in the US District Court, Middle District of Florida, against Action Research and Joseph Depante a motion to stay was recently filed asking that the FTC be given time to consider a settlement. See the filed Motion: FTC Pretext Depante

In the old days, wanted posters dotted the police and Post Office bulletin boards. Recently, I went through old papers and found this really old FBI wanted poster (yeah, I was a Special Agent with the FBI in the past)–Compare the wanted poster with the below digital wanted billboards.
Thanks to J. Craig Williams, Orange County, CA, attorney, MIPTC, for this note about new “wanted posters.” Police in Mobile, AL, put a bank robbery surveillance photo on digital billboards around the city. They caught the guy. CNN Digital Billboards.
Also, for digi edge investigators check out CNN’s CNN Digital World.

MAPS
Nothing was posted over the weekend. So, today there will be several informational and educational posts for all investigators.
We posted a GPS review the other day. Now, however, what about the best maps via computer and Internet?
Here are some great map sites:
Microsoft’s Live.com maps–great with satellite, road, traffic views, MS Live
Google maps with same satellite, road etc. — Google Maps
Install “google earth” and you can get some extremely detailed views of a specific area.
Google Earth
Google Earth combines the power of Google Search with satellite imagery, maps, terrain and 3D buildings to put the world’s geographic information at your fingertips.
You can get all kinds of weather/climate information and maps (historical and present) at NOAA, National Weather Service, NOAA Weather.
The US Census has an interesting map site, see US Census.
Ever need complete moon and sun data–times of sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset– go to US Naval Observatory, very interesting stuff: USNO.
Whew, enough of maps.
