News Past & Now

In October 2007, the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services sponsored the annual private security conference in Virginia Beach, VA.  The conference was well attended and we caught up on industry news and new legislation DCJS is submitting to the General Assembly.

Many PIAVA members attended the conference, and we conducted our annual meeting electing new officers and board members.  The new officers and board members are: Bill Lowrance, president, Bill Stollhans, prior president (Board member), Ed Hruneni, vice president, Yvonne Dover, treasurer, Bob Mrak, secretary, and Ron McKown, executive director.

Three PIAVA members recently were featured on an October 9, 2007, Voice of America presentation on women getting into the private investigation business.  Joan Beach of Joan Beach, LTD, Fairfax, VA, Michelle Platt of MLI, Inc., McLean, VA and Bill Stollhans of Potomac Investigative Services, LLC, www.potomacpi.com, gave stellar performances.  Voice of America did the show and you can read the story and watch the video at

PIAVA’s November meeting is scheduled for November 14, 2007, at Ristaurante Bonaroti in Vienna, VA.  Our speaker will be Ed Appel, CEO of iNameCheck, www.inamecheck.com.  Ed says that iNameCheck provides unique Internet research as well as other investigative services.  Ed is going to talk to us about “deep” Internet research.  Our meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. with networking.  At 7 p.m. we order dinner. We have a short business meeting after our speaker.  If you are not a PIAVA member and you want to attend the meeting contact President Bill Lowrance at president@piava.org.

At all our meetings we usually have interesting speakers and guests who keep us up to date with legislative news, investigations and technology.  We often feature our members as speakers.  Members have given presentations on surveillance, photography, undercover operations, Internet and database research, investigative techniques, computer forensics, fraud investigations and more.
